From Terror to Triumph: Eva’s Breakthrough
When Eva walked into my workshop, she didn’t hide behind polite small talk. She took a breath, and introduced herself with honesty and courage:
“I’m terrified of public speaking.” And yet—there she was. She showed up.
Standing and delivering a speech was out of the question for Eva. Instead of pushing her into the spotlight, I created an effective way for her to speak in front of a supportive audience.
We moved the chairs into a circle. I sat beside her and interviewed her, using prompts from her speech draft.
Something shifted. Sitting, speaking in a conversational way, her voice grew steadier. She realized: “Still terrified - but I can do this.”
By the fourth session, Eva stood with trembling hands and delivered her message. We gave her cheering applause. The “terrified” speaker had taken her place with confidence.
Talk Tip:
If you, like Eva, feel paralyzed at the thought of speaking, know this: confidence is built step by step, not all at once. Try beginning with small, safe speaking moments:
Make a toast at a dinner party
Read a short poem or passage aloud to friends
Ask a question at a public meeting or lecture
Gather 2–3 supportive friends to form a “speaking circle”
Work with a coach who will meet you right where you are
Each step is a victory and proves that your voice matters. And, just like Eva, you may find one day you’re not only standing at the front of the room—you’re shining there too.
